The ultimate goal of each doctor and specialist is to acquire the necessary knowledge to be able to treat his patients effectively. Medicine has evolved so much that we are seeing a division of each specialty into sub-specialties. A sub-specialized doctor needs recognition within his/her community, then would be easily to identify by gatekeeper and primary healthcare providers. Simply being aware of a knowledgeable colleague is not sufficient, rather an awareness of that colleague’s experience and skillset is also necessary before making an appropriate referral.
